African Research and Education Day to be held in Turku on 13 of November

University of Turku will host African Research and Education Day on 13 November, marking the final seminar of the Finland-Africa Platform for Innovation (FAPI), a network of Finnish universities dedicated to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The seminar will bring together researchers, and academics to discuss the future of education, research, and innovation in collaboration with African partners. The event aims to foster mutual understanding and explore opportunities for future cooperation. 

As Africa’s global influence rises, the seminar will address key questions on how higher education can adapt, including fostering sustainable educational cooperation with African partners and incorporating global changes into curriculum development. It will also explore ways to raise awareness about Africa among Finnish students and researchers. 

The seminar will feature contributions from experts. Marjo Kaartinen, Rector of the University of Turku, and Jutta Urpilainen, European Commissioner for International Partnerships, will open the event. Professor John Ouma Mugabe from the University of Pretoria will deliver the keynote speech, focusing on the role of education in science, technology, and innovation strategies in Africa. 

This event consists of three sessions with the following themes: 

Session 1: Research-Based University Education in Finland and Africa 

Session 2: FAPI Network Collaboration Cases with Africa: Future Impact 

Session 3: The Importance of Namibia-Finland Cooperation in the Future 

The event will conclude with a panel discussion on education and research with impact regarding Africa lead by Professor Jussi Jauhiainen, the academic leader of the network.  

In addition to the sessions and discussions, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their posters. All FAPI and African-related projects are encouraged to present their work on issues or collaborations with Africa.
